Start the thread a little way back from the eye, after three or four turns catch in a starling hackle by its tip.

Form the body with the silk, finishing where you tied in the hackle.

Twist the hackle around the silk.

Wind the hackle and silk together over the front third of the hook shank.

Trim out the hackle and whip finish.

A simple, effective, and famous small black fly.

Hook: Size 14 to 20 wet fly hook.

Thread: Darkest brown silk waxed with cobblers wax.

Hackle: Starling (Black with a green cast).
